HOUSTON - The University of Houston golf team wraps up a busy month of March as it begins the first of two tournaments over a five-day span at the Border Olympics, starting Friday morning.
The Cougars will play 54 holes at Laredo Country Club on Friday before wrapping up the tournament with the final 18 holes on Saturday. From there, the team will head to Little Rock, Ark., to compete at the First Tee/UALR Collegiate Classic on Monday and Tuesday in the team's fifth and final tournament of the month.
At the Border Olympics, UH joins Michigan State, Lamar, Texas-Arlington, Baylor, Louisiana-Monroe, Rice, Louisiana-Lafayette, Southeastern Louisiana, North Texas and Texas State on the 7,125-yard, par-72 course.
Sophomore Ricky Romano leads the Cougars with a 73.2 scoring average, nearly a stroke better than his closest competitor on the team. He joins teammates Pablo Acuna and Ricky Romano as the only Cougars to compete in all eight tournaments to date.
Acuna ranks second on the team with a 74.01 average, while Mowbray is third at 75.3.
Other Cougars scheduled to compete are junior Kevin Newman and freshman Jordan Irwin who won medalist honors at the Palmetto Intercollegiate on March 14-15. In addition, junior Adam Young will make his first appearance as a Cougar, competing as an individual this weekend.
This marks the second consecutive year that the Cougars will compete at the Border Olympics. In 2004, UH finished in 14th place after shooting a team score of 892.
