Swimming and Diving Splits Meet with North Texas, SMU

DENTON, Texas - Sophomore Szintia Szanto won two individual swimming events and Azul Almazan and Anna Kiess dominated the diving events to help lead the University of Houston swimming and diving team to a split against host North Texas and SMU at the North Texas Student Recreation Center on Friday evening.
The Cougars, who improved to 4-7 overall in dual meets this season, enjoyed a 157.5-114.5 win over North Texas and dropped a 139-129 decision to SMU at the meet.
A native of Budapest, Hungary, Szanto was the only Cougar swimmer to win an individual event. She took top honors in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.34 and followed that with first place in the 100-yard breaststroke after a clocking of 1:07.39.
On the diving side, Kiess tallied 300.15 points to win the event as the only diver to top the 300-point mark. Almazan finished third with 269.35 points.
In the 3-meter competition, the Cougar duo switched places. Almazan led all divers with 316.15 points as the only diver to score more than 300 points, while Kiess finished third with 292.55 points.
Senior captain Meagan Wien finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.39, while Alejandra Salazar (1,000-yard freestyle), Jenny Hagen (200-yard freestyle) earned third-place finishes in their respective events.
The Cougars' 200-yard medley relay team of Kristin Bay, Randee Billips, Vicki Blocker and Wien started UH on a positive note with a second-place finish after posting a time of 1:53.48.
The Cougars return to action at 5 p.m., Friday, when they meet Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. Earlier this season, the Cardinals participated at the Cougar Invitational on Nov. 19-21 at UH's own Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
