Volleyball Can't Overcome Bobcats

HOUSTON - After spending three weeks on the road, the Houston volleyball team was back in action at the Athletics/Alumni Center looking for a win, but Texas State downed the Cougars in four games (30-27, 19-30, 26-30, 25-30) to take the match 3-1.
Houston's loss was only the third time in the history of the two schools that the Cougars have fallen to the Bobcats, leaving the all-time series record at 21-3 in favor of Houston.
However, the loss also leaves the Cougars (1-11) with a school record 11 straight losses, surpassing the previous record of 10, set from Oct. 10-31 in 1981.
As a team the Cougars hit .094 to the Bobcats' .226, the attack errors really made the difference in the match as Houston recorded 13 errors off attacks than the Bobcats.
Junior transfer Kariny Ritter led the Cougars on the night, posting the second double-double of her career with 13 kills and 14 digs on the evening. Junior libero Jaci Gonzalez was solid on defense with 24 kills to go along with her two assists.
Houston came out strong in Game 1 and defeated the Bobcats 30-27, despite having 11 attack errors in the game.
But the Bobcats came back and easily won Game 2 as Houston committed 13 attack errors to Texas State's four and had 10 kills to the Bobcats' 13.
Game 3 saw the teams playing tight, neither team managed to gain much of an advantage over the other with the largest lead reach two points until 25-23 with Houston trailing. That when the Bobcats managed to string together a couple of tough rallies to come out with the win, leading the match 2-1 heading into Game 4.
Tied at 19 a piece in Game 4, the teams traded points to 21 all before Texas State pulled away for the decisive 30-25 victory to claim the match.
The Conference USA schedule begins Friday night when the Cougars face Southern Miss at the Athletics/Alumni Center beginning at 7:00 p.m. and then hosting Tulane on Saturday also at 7:00 p.m.
