FLOWER MOUND, Texas - University of Houston golfers Ricky Romano and Zach Mowbray ranked among the Top 10 individual leaders to help put the Cougars in third place after the first day of the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic.
The Cougars fired a team score of 292 in Monday's opening round and then lowered that score by three strokes in the afternoon session to finish at 581 after 36 holes on the 7,120-yard, par-72 course at Lantana Golf Club.
Host North Texas stood atop the team leaderboard at 574, while Stephen F. Austin was in second place.
Romano fired a 3-under-par 69 in the first round and finished the day with a 73 to tie for third place at 2-under-par 141. After shooting a 74 in the morning session, Mowbray rebounded to fire a 69 as well in the afternoon session and was in seventh place at 1-under-par 143.
The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes, starting at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Individually, Louisiana Tech's Preston Smith and Stephen F. Austin's Brian Grossman stood in a first-place tie after the first day at 141. North Texas' Brian McPherson and Andreas Kali-Nilsson and UALR's Patrick Sullivan joined Romano in a tie for third place.
On the UH side, sophomore Pablo Acuna fired back-to-back 73s during the day to tie for 16th place at 146. Competing in his first collegiate tournament, freshman Jordan Irwin was tied for 38th place at 151 and was joined by fellow Cougar Jordan Hasbrouck.
Arkansas-Little Rock (588), Arkansas State (591), Middle Tennessee (592), Sam Houston State (596), Texas-San Antonio (596), Louisiana Tech (596) and Louisiana-Lafayette (597) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
