ARLINGTON, Texas - Hitting the road for the first time this season, the Cougars had trouble getting things going at the University of Texas at Arlington Tournament on Friday, dropping both matches on the day.
The Cougars (1-5) fell to UT-Arlington (6-0) 3-0 in the first game of the tournament and then to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (4-1) 3-1 in the afternoon.
In Match 1 for the Cougars today, UT-Arlington notched a win in the first-ever meeting between the Cougars and Mavericks as Arlington won the match in three games, 30-19, 30-24 and 30-28.
Houston had an opportunity to push the match to a fourth game, leading 18-11 in the third game. But the Mavericks came on strong and rallied to a 7-2 run and then another 5-1 run to close out the match.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelly McAnelly led the way for the Cougars, putting up a match-high performance of 13 kills and 10 digs while teammate Kariny Ritter slammed down 12 kills of her own with a blistering .429 hitting percentage.
Facing the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in Match 2 of the tournament, Houston won the first game 30-27, but the lead in the match didn't last long as the Tojans came back to win the next three games (30-14, 30-17, 30-20).
Again, McAnelly lead all players with 15 kills but with no other Cougar in double digits Little Rock won the match going away. Errors were the difference in the match as Houston committed 41 attack errors to the Trojans 16.
The Cougars will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow as they take on the Hoosiers of Indiana (3-1) at 1:00 p.m. at UT-Arlington in the final match of the tournament for Houston.
