HOUSTON - Senior captain Kristin Bay moved her name higher in the Cougar records book to help lead the University of Houston swimming and diving team to a second-finish standing after the first day of the Cougar Invitational on Friday at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
The Cougars collected 315 points to trail crosstown rival Rice's 460 points. Incarnate Word was in third place with 50 points, and New Orleans rounded out the field with 44 points.
The meet resumes at 10 a.m., Saturday with the preliminaries of the 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard backstroke. The finals of those events and the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays will begin around 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Cougar Diving team continues its season Saturday with the 3-meter competition at the Texas A&M Invitational. Preliminaries are slated to begin around 1 p.m. with the final scheduled for 6 p.m.
Bay, a native of Tyler, Texas, became only sixth different swimmer in school history to break the 24-second plateau in the 50-yard freestyle. Her time of 23.98 was a CRWC Natatorium record by any Cougar swimmer.
In addition, she posted the seventh-fastest time in school history in the 100-yard backstroke with a split time of 57.81. Bay also was a member of the Cougars' 400-yard medley relay team - joining fellow senior captain Meagan Wien, Stacey Williams and Nicole Vaiana - which posted the eighth-fastest time in UH history with a clocking of 3:56.46.
Szintia Szanto finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.89.
Wien placed third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.90.
