Swimming & Diving Takes Dominating Win at Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. - Senior Vicki Blocker won two individual events, while Megan Wien, Stacey Williams, Kristin Bay and Jenny Hagen each won one event and were a part of two winning relay teams during the University of Houston Swimming & Diving team's 116-50 win over Centenary College on Friday at the Haynes Fitness Center.
The Cougars completely dominated the Ladies in the first-ever meeting between the two schools in the water. UH won each of the three relay events and all eight individual events to win their first dual meet of the season and improve to 1-3 in 2004.
With the Cougars' Fall Invitational coming up on Nov. 19-21 at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium, head coach Mark Taylor shuffled his lineup and placed many of the team's swimmers in off-events to assist in its training.
Blocker captured first place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.03 and in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.97.
Williams took top honors in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.25 and was a part of the Cougars' winning 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams. Wien won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.59 and was a key member of the Cougars' winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams.
A freshman from Cincinnati, Hagen won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.75 and was a part of the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.
Bay won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 1:01.97 was a part of UH's winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams.
Other Cougars winners were Alejandra Salazar, who won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.47 and Nicole Vaiana, who finished first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:20.41. Both Salazar and Vaiana were also members of winning relay teams.
Amy Duke also was a part of the Cougars' winning 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.
The Cougars wrap up their stay in north Louisiana at 11 a.m., Saturday when they meet Louisiana-Monroe in a dual meet at the Lake C. Oxford Natatorium in Monroe, La.
