HOUSTON - Sophomores Szintia Szanto and Anna Kiess each won multiple individual events, but it would not be enough as the University of Houston swimming and diving team fell 156-140 to Conference USA rival TCU on Thursday at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
Hours after being named the C-USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, Szanto and Kiess led the Cougars against the Horned Frogs. Szanto led all Cougar performers with three first-place finishes. The Budapest, Hungary, native started her meet by finishing first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.97.
She finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:22.33, more than two seconds ahead of her closest competitor, and then capped her night with a first-place showing in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:09.31, more than eight seconds ahead of her closest competitor.
While Szanto was taking care of the swimming events, Kiess was equally impressive on the diving side. The Berlin, Germany, native won her fifth and sixth consecutive events to open the 2004 fall season by sweeping both springboard competitions. She started her night with 313.20 points to claim top honors on the 3-meter board.
Seven events later, she added to the Cougars' team score with another first-place finish after tallying 315.38 points on the 1-meter board. Kiess was the only diver in the meet to score at least 300 points in any event.
Senior captain Kristin Bay also claimed top honors in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.93.
Meagan Wien placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.10, while Stacey Williams earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.30. Alejandra Salazar finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a clocking of 10:44.49 and followed that with another second-place showing in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:13.38.
Jenny Hagen finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.43.
The Cougars' 200-yard medley relay team of Bay, Szanto, Vicki Blocker and Wien finished second with a time of 1:50.41.
The Cougars will take another break from competition before returning to the water. UH travels to north Louisiana to meet Centenary at 6 p.m., Nov. 12 and then faces Louisiana-Monroe at 11 a.m., Nov. 13.
UH doesn't return to the friendly waters of the CRWC Natatorium until Nov. 19-21 when it plays host to the UH Fall Invitational. In addition to the Cougars, Rice, Incarnate Word, New Orleans and Arkansas are scheduled to compete at the three-day event.
