HOUSTON - Anna Kiess and Azul Almazan placed 1-2 in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events, but it would not be quite enough as Texas took a 123-115 win over the University of Houston swimming and diving team Friday in a dual meet at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
Kiess, the 2004 Conference USA Freshman Diver of the Year, scored 312.83 to win top honors on the 3-meter board. Almazan was a close second at 307.35 points, making the Cougars the only divers to top the 300-point mark in the event.
Five events later, the Cougar diving duo equaled their standing on the 1-meter board. Kiess scored 280.20 points to claim first place, while Almazan was more than 20 points ahead of her closest competitor with 264.45 points.
Both Kiess and Almazan qualified for the 2004 NCAA Championships a year ago and are expected to perform as well this season.
The Cougars return to action at noon, Saturday, when they play host to crosstown rival Rice at the CRWC Natatorium. That meet is free and open to the public, which is invited to attend.
The Longhorns won the first relay event of the day and captured first and second place in each of the first four swimming events to build a commanding lead. Texas swimmers also claimed first place in all eight swimming events to on the way to the win.
Sophomore Stacey Williams tied for second place in the 200-yard butterfly with a clocking of 2:12.15, while Vicki Blocker was second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.73.
Friday's meet marked the first time since 2001 that the Cougars had lost their season-opening meet. UH had reeled off back-to-back season-opening wins over North Texas in each of the last two seasons.
