HOUSTON - Conference USA foe Cincinnati was in town as the Cougars played host to the Bearcats at the Athletics/Alumni Center where Houston struggled to stay in the match, falling 3-1 on Friday night.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 4-13 on the season and 3-2 in C-USA while the Bearcats improve to 14-6 on the year and remain undefeated in C-USA at 5-0.
Despite three Cougars reaching double-digit kill numbers, it just wasn't enough to get past the 2003 defending C-USA Champions.
Sophomore Kelly McAnelly paced the Cougars with 14 kills, but hit in the negatives for the first time this year with 19 errors on 50 attempts for a -.100 performance. Sophomore Becca Sartori and junior Kariny Ritter each chipped in 10 kills for Houston and were active defensively with Sartori stuffing four Bearcat attempts and Ritter stopping three of her own.
As a team, the Cougars hit .056 on the evening, but picked up 45 digs and 9.5 blocks on the night.
Cincinnati came out strong and handily won Games 1 and 2 by scores of 30-21 and 30-20.
Houston showed some strength and determination by bouncing back in Game 3 to take the game 30-26. It marked the first time this season the team was able to group together during the break when being down 2-0 and come back out to take Game 3.
But the win wouldn't be enough as the Bearcats regrouped and claimed Game 4 by a score of 30-21 with C-USA Preseason Player of the Year leading the was with 17 kills on the evening.
The Cougars jump back into action Saturday night at the Athletics/Alumni Center as they face No. 21 Louisville in their fourth match of the season against a USA Today/CSTV Top-25 team.
