Cougars Finish In Second Place At Big Wave Classic

Honolulu, Hawaii - The University of Houston men's cross country team registered a second-place finish at the Big Wave Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii on Saturday.
UCLA won the men's team title with 19 points as the Bruins had five of the seven top runners in the race. Houston had four of the top 15 runners to finish with 50 points, Hawaii-Pacific was third with 76 points and BYU-Hawaii finished in fourth place with 98 points.
Sophomore Sesar Figueroa was Houston's top runner with a third-place finish as he completed the five-kilometer course with a time of 15:22. Austin Ramos won the race with a time of 15:13 and Micky Cobrin of UCLA finished in second place with a time of 15:21.
UCLA's Erik Emilsson and Chad Gilbreath finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively, while Houston's Cole Dailey registered a sixth-place finish with a time of 15:46.
Houston's Brent Henson finished in 12th place with a time of 16:14, Ronnie Martinez finished in 14th place with a time of 16:16 and Maurillio Sanchez finished in 15th place with a time of 16:20. Jason Banes also finished in 19th place with a time of 16:31 and Paul Goodwin completed the course in 22nd place with a time of 16:44.
In the women's division, UCLA also won the women's title with 26 points, while BYU finished in second place with 45 points and Navy and San Diego State tied for third place with 122 points. Houston finished in fifth place with 162 points.
Michaela Mannova of BYU was the women's champion as she completed the four-kilometer course with a time of 13:28. Chelsea Smith of BYU-Hawaii finished in second place with a time of 13:48, while Ashleh of UCLA finished in third place with a time of 13:54.
Houston's top runner was Jessie Oakes, who finished in 19th place with a time of 14:49. Janay Covington finished in 22nd place with a time of 14:52 and Shawna Florida was 32nd with a time of 15:35.
