STILLWATER, Okla. - University of Houston golfer Brett Callas shot an 81 during the second round of the NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., on Wednesday to fall into a tie for 107th place.
Callas, who qualified for the event after winning the NCAA Central Regional, has posted a two-round score of 16-over-par 160 on the 7,095-yard, par-72 course.
The Championships continues with the third round beginning off Thursday morning and continuing through Friday.
Starting the day in a tie for 87th place, Callas began his second round on the back nine. He began his round with four straight pars before bogeying the par-4 14th hole. He rallied to consecutive pars but shot a seven on the par-4 17th hole. However, the Huffman, Texas, native rebounded with a birdie on the 18th hole to finish his first nine holes with a 39.
His final nine holes began much the same as the first with three consecutive pars. However, the next three holes would prove to be a challenge for the Cougar senior. He recorded back-to-back bogeys on the par-4 fourth and fifth holes and then followed with a double bogey on the sixth hole. Callas then double-bogeyed the ninth hole to close the round with an 81.
UCLA jumped into the team lead at 598 after shooting a team score of 295 in the second round. The Bruins were the only team to shoot better than 300 on Wednesday.
Host Oklahoma State was second at 599 with Clemson, Florida, Auburn, Wake Forest, USC, UNLV, Minnesota, Arizona State and Washington rounding out the Top 10 team leaders.
Individually, first-round leader Lee Williams of Auburn maintained his advantage and stood in first place at 3-under-par 141. He was the only golfer to shoot under par through the first two rounds. Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State was three strokes back at even-par 144.
