STILLWATER, Okla. - University of Houston golfer Brett Callas fired a 79 during the first round at the 2003 NCAA Championships to stand in a tie for 87th place at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
The Huffman, Texas, native stood at even-par through 15 holes but struggled on two of the last three holes for his standing after the first day.
The second round resumes Wednesday morning on the 7,095-yard, par-72 course.
Callas started the round on a positive note with a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole. After falling back to even par with a bogey on the par-four eighth hole, he finished his first nine holes at 36.
He began the back nine in steady fashion, making par on each of the first six holes. However, that's when his trouble started as he recorded 8s on each of the par-four 16th and 17th holes. Fortunately, the Cougar senior regained his composure to birdie the par-5 18th hole and finish the day at 79.
Callas qualified for the 2003 NCAA Championships after winning the NCAA Central Regional in Manhattan, Kan. He became only the second golfer in school history to win an NCAA Regional and set a new school record for the lowest score in the final round of an NCAA Regional.
Oklahoma State, North Carolina State, Clemson and Auburn stood atop the team leaderboard at 11-over-par 299. USC, Duke, Florida, UCLA, Wake Forest and Illinois rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.
Individually, Lee Williams of Auburn grabbed the early lead with a 3-under-par 69 in the first round. Lamar's Chris Stroud and Augusta State's Oliver Wilson tied for second with 70s.
Only four players shot under par, and only 12 players fired an even-par 72 or better during the first 18 holes.
