MANHATTAN, Kan. - University of Houston golfer Brett Callas moved into a tie for sixth place Friday after shooting a 3-under-par 69 during the second round of the 2003 NCAA Central Regional.
Callas, one of two seniors on this year's Cougar team, finished the day at 4-under-par 140 and was tied with Chris Stroud of Lamar.
The Top 10 Teams and top two individual golfers not on those teams qualify for the 2003 NCAA Championships on May 27-30 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
The final round begins at 7:30 a.m., Saturday.
The Huffman, Texas, native birdied three of his first four holes to open the round on the 7,288-yard, par-72 course at Colbert Hills Country Club. Even after recording a bogey on the par-4 eighth hole, Callas rebounded to shoot a birdie on the next hole and tally a 33 through the first nine holes.
He continued his hot play with a birdie on the 10th hole as well. Despite bogeying back-to-back holes on 16 and 17, Callas rebounded to fire his sixth birdie of the day on the 18th hole and finish the round at 69.
