Houston Takes Second Place in Cougar Invitational

Azul Almazan captured the platform diving event and freshman Szintia Szanto took the 200-yard butterfly by over seven seconds as the University of Houston women's swimming program wrapped up a second place finish in the third and final day of the Cougar Invitational at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium on the University of Houston campus on Saturday, Nov. 22.
The University of Tennessee took first place in the invitational with 1,300.50 total points, followed by host Houston with 1,068.0, Florida International at 497.0, Arkansas, which sent only its diving team, with 88 points and Incarnate Word with 33 points.
After placing one-two in the preliminaries in the afternoon, Almazan and fellow Houston diver Anna Kiess swept first and second place in the platform diving finals with 468.15 and 447.90 points, respectively.
Szanto, who took first place in the 400-yard IM on Friday night, easily won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.83, the second-fastest time in Houston school history behind Diane Johannigman, who swam the event in 1:57.88 in March 1980.
The Lady Volunteers captured first place finishes in five events, including the 400-yard freestyle relay, en route to their meet victory. Houston etched second-place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:31.51.
Cougar Lucile Turpin placed second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:38.06, followed by freshmen Amanda Abrams (17:59.32) and Liz Goeggel (18:02.14). Kristin Bay placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a finishing time of 53.17, and Turpin finished in third in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:10.49.
