CINCINNATI, Ohio - Freshmen swimmers Haley Menard and Szintia Szanto each posted two first-place individual finishes to help the University of Houston swimming and diving program to two wins Saturday afternoon over Conference USA rivals Louisville and Cincinnati during an NCAA tri-meet in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Competing in only swimming events, the Cougars took a dominating 153-46 win over Louisville and edged the host Bearcats with a 103-100 decision to take the sweep in unofficial results. With the sweep, the Cougars improved to 4-3 overall this season in dual meets.
Szanto continued her recent domination of late by taking first place in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:28.14, more than five seconds faster than her closest competitor. That time qualified as the eighth fastest in that event in school history and came after she recorded the fifth-fastest time less than 24 hours before in a tri-meet against Kentucky and Louisville.
A native of Budapest, Hungary, Szanto also placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.33, making her the ninth-fastest different performer in that event in school history.
Menard claimed first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.06 and followed that with her second first-place finish of the day in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.70.
Senior Lucile Turpin took top honors in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:43.87 and finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:13.46. Fellow senior Kristin Bay placed first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.20.
The Cougars capped their day by winning first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Menard, Stacey Williams, Laura Starr and Bay recorded a time of 1:39.23, only six-tenths of a second faster than Cincinnati.
Freshman Kat Lau earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.59 and was just one of two swimmers to finish that event in less than one minute.
Senior co-captain Kristina DeWitt placed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:03.24.
The Cougars will take another lengthy break before returning home to play host to the UH Fall Invitational on Nov. 20-22 at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
