Houston volleyball falls in five to Marquette

HOUSTON, Texas - Halloween night proved to be full of excitement for The University of Houston Cougars and Marquette University Golden Eagles volleyball teams as the two battled through a five-game match, which the Golden Eagles pulled out 15-13 win in the final game to take the match 3-2.
Marquette opened the match with a 30-27 win in game one and appeared to be in command taking game two 30-22 before the break.
In game three Houston (7-15, 3-5 C-USA) came out of the locker room on fire, taking the third game 30-21 behind a team hitting percentage of .343. Loure Dews hit .714 in the game with five kills.
Game four was a back and forth battle which the Cougars would not let Marquette have. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early six-point lead at 9-3, but Houston rallied to take their first lead of the game 22-21.
With the game tied at 27, neither team could get a game winning point until the Cougars got one when Marquette's Erin Freer made an attacking error, helping Houston to a 36-34 win.
Game five proved to be just as wild as game four as Marquette jumped out to a 10-1 lead before Houston found its feet. The Cougars battled back to within one point at 14-13, but the Golden Eagles pulled out the victory on a kill by Freer.
Theresa Coughlin's 24 kills and 10 digs led Marquette while Lauren Pierce added 18, Ann Lopata added 16 kills and Freer finished with 15 kills and 15 digs.
Houston was led by Dews' 22 kills with seven block assists and two solo blocks. The Cougars got double-double performances from two players, Cinthia Piva had 13 kills and 16 digs while Kelly McAnelly finished with 14 kills and 10 digs. Setter Mirela Vasconcellos had 48 assists and Jaci Gonzalez finished with a game high 25 digs.
The Cougars will be in action again Saturday night when they take on the DePaul Blue Demons at 7:30 p.m. at Hofheinz Pavilion.
