FRISCO, Texas - Three Cougars posted sub-par rounds on the day to help lead the University of Houston golf team to a sixth-place standing at the Sooner Invitational after the first day of competition.
Brett Callas was the Cougars' leading player after 36 holes on the 7,021-yard, par-72 course at the Dallas Athletic Club. Callas fired an even-par 72 in the morning session and capped the day with a 70 on his scorecard to tie for 19th at 142 heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.
Another pair of Cougars rebounded from tough morning rounds to break par. Chris Cureton, competing in his first tournament of the year, bounced back with a 4-under-par 68 to tie for 22nd place at 144. Simon Robinson, a 2002 All-Conference USA honoree, also shot 68 later in the day and was tied for 50th at 150.
Other Cougar golfers were Scott Ferguson (144, t-22nd), John Wine (149, t-41st) and Kevin Newman (163 (57th).
The tournament concludes with 18 holes scheduled to begin Tuesday morning.
Conference USA rival TCU leads the tournament with a team score of 551, seven strokes ahead of host Oklahoma and two strokes ahead of New Mexico. Pepperdine and USC are tied for fourth at 566.
The Horned Frogs are also well-represented on the individual leaderboard with the top two spots. Colby Beckstrom stands atop the standings with a 12-under-par 132 while teammate Adam Rubinson is secon at 9-under-par 135.
