Golf Opens 2002 Fall Season in Tennessee

HOUSTON - The University of Houston golf team starts its 2002 fall season Saturday at one of the nation's premier collegiate golf tournaments.
Competing in their first tournament of season, the Cougars take part in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on The Ridges Golf Course in Jonesborough, Tenn. The Cougars placed 14th last year at the tournament and look to improve this year.
The Cougars are joined by some tough competition. Six out of the 13 competitors are ranked in the top 25 for Golfworld including No. 6 Wake Forest, No. 11 North Carolina, No. 13 Auburn, No. 14 Tennessee, No. 19 Virginia Tech and No. 20 TCU. Other teams on the field include Arkansas, Augusta State, Duke, Georgia Southern, Michigan, South Carolina and host East Tennessee State.
The tournament begins with 36 holes scheduled for Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday.
The Cougars will be busy with back-to-back tournaments during the next five days and will be traveling on Sunday to Dallas to play in the Sooner Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
Senior Simon Robinson is coming off of an impressive junior season to become one of the key leaders on the Cougar golf team. Robinson was an All-Conference USA selection last year and ended the year as the Cougars leading player at the 2002 NCAA Central Regional.
Senior Brett Callas looks to continue where he left off last year after winning medalist honors at The Maxwell. Freshman Kevin Newman will be making his first collegiate tournament appearance this weekend. Newman, a true freshman broke into the starting line-up by impressing the coaches during fall practice.
Junior Scott Ferguson, who tied for 19th at the Conference USA Tournament last season and senior John Wine will also be joining them on the course this weekend.
Conference USA rivals TCU has won this tournament in back-to-back years.
