Golf Finishes 19th at NCAA Central Regional

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Despite a steady scoring performance throughout the tournament, the University of Houston golf team ended its 2002 season Saturday with a 19th-place finish at the NCAA Central Regional.
The Cougars, who made their sixth straight NCAA Regional as a team, fired a score of 301 during the final 18 holes at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Little Rock, Ark., but were unable to break into the top 10 team leaders which advance to the NCAA Championships.
Simon Robinson, a 2002 All-Conference USA and C-USA All-Tournament Team honoree led the Cougars in their final event of the season with a three-day score of 221.
Other Cougars competing in the event were Brett Callas (t-65th, 227), Brad McIntosh (t-92nd, 231), Kevin Hermis (t-96th, 232) and Scott Ferguson (116th, 236).
Oklahoma State and Purdue tied for the regional championship with team scores of 865. Tulsa, Illinois, North Carolina State, Toledo, Baylor, TCU, Virginia Tech and Colorado rounded out the top 10 team leaders.
Individually, Lee Williamson of Purdue fired a 72 in the final round to capture medalist honors with a score of 209, two strokes better than TCU's Bret Guetz and Purdue's Chris Mayson. David Jones (Toledo), Franklin Hatchett (SMU) and Tom Johnson (Northwestern) completed the top five individual leaders.
UH , which received a No. 16 seed in the Regional, became the second Cougar team to advance to the NCAA postseason this year.
