NAVARRE, Fla. - The University of Houston golf team saved its best for last during the final day of the Conference USA Championships but it would not be quite enough as the Cougars finished second at the league's annual postseason event.
The Cougars, who had won five straight C-USA Tournaments entering the 2002 event, shot the best team round of the event with a score of 280 to jump into second place in the final standings at 864. C-USA newcomer TCU captured the team title with a score of 858.
Simon Robinson, Brett Callas and Brett Callas all shot under par for the Cougars during the final 18 holes on the 6,795-yard, par-72 course at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla. Robinson fired UH's best round of the tournament Wednesday with a final-round score of 69 to finish at 6-under-par 210.
For his efforts at the tournament and throughout the season, Robinson was named to the All-Conference USA Team and earned a spot on the C-USA All-Tournament Team for the second straight year.
Ferguson shot a 69 during the final 18 holes to jump into a tie for 19th place at 219, while Callas posted a score of 71 to finish in 18th place with a 54-hole total of 218.
Brad McIntosh, the 2001 C-USA Tournament individual champion, and John Wine each tied for 36th place at 224.
Individually, TCU's Bret Guetz held on to his lead and finished the tournament at 11-under-par 205 for medalist honors. Guetz' final score topped the previous tournament record of 209, set by UH's Andy Sanders in 1999.
Saint Louis' Evan Frederick finished second at 7-under-par 209.
In the team competition, Southern Mississippi finished third with South Florida, Louisville, UAB, East Carolina, Charlotte, Memphis and Tulane rounding out the top 10.
The Cougars will now take a break from the competitive course before returning to action May 11-12 at The Maxwell in Ardmore, Okla.
