Golf in Fifth Place at Conference USA Championships

NAVARRE, Fla. - The University of Houston golf team stood in a tie for fifth place Monday after the first round of the Conference USA Championships at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla.
The Cougars, who entered the tournament as the five-time defending tournament champions, fired a team score of 294 to tie with Louisville, only three strokes behind first-day leaders Southern Mississippi and TCU.
The tournament continues with another 18 holes scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. CDT Tuesday.
Individually, Brett Callas and John Wine each fired even-par 72 on the 6,795-yard course to top the Cougars and tie for 12th on the individual leaderboard. Wine used a steady effort, shooting 36 on the front and back nines, while Callas rebounded from a disappointing 40 on the front nine to shoot 32 during the final nine holes.
Simon Robinson shot a 74 for the Cougars and stood in a tie for 21st place, while Scott Ferguson tied for 37th place at 76. Brad McIntosh, the defending C-USA Tournament individual champion, finished the round with a score of 79 to tie for 54th place.
Charlotte posted a score of 292 to stand in third place on Monday, while South Florida shot 293 to place fourth. UAB, Tulane, East Carolina, Memphis and Cincinnati rounded out the top 10 leaders.
TCU's Bret Guetz led all players with a score of 66 and finished two strokes ahead of Tulane's Chris Wheeler. Jason Harris of East Carolina and Evan Frederick of Saint Louis were tied for third at 69.
