NAVARRE, Fla. - When it comes to the Conference USA Golf Championships, nobody does it better than the University of Houston.
The Cougars, the only team champions that C-USA has ever known in its five-year history, begin defense of their crown on Monday when they compete at the league's postseason event. Monday and Tuesday's tee times are slated for 7 a.m. CDT, while Wednesday's competition is slated to begin at 7:30 a.m.
For the fourth straight year, the tournament will be on the 6,795-yard, par-72 course at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla.
In addition to the team's extensive postseason history, the Cougars also boast a rich tradition of individual excellence at the C-USA Championships, with UH players winning the last three individual crowns. Andy Sanders captured medalist honors in 1999 and 2000 before sophomore Brad McIntosh won the 2001 championship with a score of 2-under-par 214.
This season, McIntosh enters the tournament as the Cougars' second leading player with a 73.9 scoring average but earned the team's highest individual finish with a fifth-place showing at the Las Vegas Collegiate on March 8-10.
Junior Simon Robinson, the C-USA Golfer of the Month in October, enters the tournament as the team's leading player with a 73.5 scoring average and finished seventh at the Red River Classic on Oct. 8-9.
The Cougars come into the tournament on the heels of a disappointing 16th-place finish at the ASU Thunderbird/Savane Invitational on April 12-13. At that event, sophomore Scott Ferguson used a steady performance to shoot 4-under-par 212 and tie for 25th place.
