Golf in 16th Place at ASU Thunderbird/Savane Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Houston stood in 16th place Friday after the first round of the ASU Thunderbird/Savane Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
After opening the tournament with a team score of 299 through the first 18 holes, the team improved to 293 during the second round but stood 45 shots behind leader Texas.
The third and final round begins Saturday morning at the 7,027-yard, par-72 cpourse at the Karsten Golf course.
Scott Ferguson led the Cougars in the morning round with a 68, making him the only Cougar the break par during the first 18 holes. The Houston native fired a 73 in the second round to stand in a tie for 26th place at 3-under-par 141.
Junior Simon Robinson, the Conference USA Golfer of the Month in October, joined Ferguson in the sub-par ranks during the afternoon session, shooting 3-under-par 36. The Hartlepool, England, native was in a tie for 52nd place at 146 and was joined at that total by UH teammate Brad McIntosh, who fired a 70 during the final 18 holes Friday.
Other Cougar golfers were Kevin Hermis (159, 86th) and Daniel Angenscheidt (163, 88th).
Texas grabbed the team lead after the first day with a score of 547, 11 strokes better than second place and host Arizona State. New Mexico and Oklahoma State tied for third at 561 with Pepperdine, Arizona, Oregon, TCU, BYU and USC rounding out the top 10.
Individually, Pat Moore of Arizona State fired 67-64 in the first two rounds to stand at 13-under-par 131. Oregon's Chris Carnahan equaled Moore with a 64 in the second round and stood only one stroke off the lead at 132.
The tournament will be the Cougars' final tune-up before defending their title at the 2002 C-USA Championships on April 22-24 at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla.
