HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston golf team returns to action this weekend in its final tournament of the year before the 2002 Conference USA Championships.
The Cougars join 15 schools at the Arizona State/Thunderbird Savane Invitational when they play the first 36 holes of the tournament Friday on the 7,037-yard, par-72 Karsten Golf Course. UH will compete against Arizona, BYU, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Pepperdine, Stanford, Texas, TCU, UCLA, USC, Washington and host Arizona State.
UH comes into the tournament after finishing seventh at the U.S. Collegiate Championships April 4-5. It marked the Cougars' third straight top-10 team finish and their fifth overall this season.
At that tournament, sophomore Kevin Hermis enjoyed the best event of his young UH career. The Houston native fired a UH-season best 66 in the first round of the event and finished in a tie for 13th place with a three-day score of 219.
However, the Cougars' most consistent performer at the U.S. Championships was Scott Ferguson, who played as an individual. Ferguson remained steady throughout the 54 holes, shooting 72-73-72 to finish ninth at 1-over-par 217.
Junior Simon Robinson, who tied with Hermis at the U.S. Collegiate Championships in 13th place, remains the team's leading player with a 73.3 scoring average. Sophomore Brad McIntosh, the 2001 C-USA Tournament individual champion, is second on the squad with a 74.0 average.
The tournament will be the Cougars' final tune-up before defending their title at the 2002 C-USA Championships on April 22-24 at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla.
