Golf Rises in Final Standings at Hawaii Tournament

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - The University of Houston golf team used a solid performance throughout the final round of the Waikoloa Intercollegiate on Friday to shoot up the final standings into a tie for ninth place.
The Cougars, who had been tied for 18th entering the final 18 holes, fired a team score of 292 to jump into the top 10 team leaders on the 7,047-yard, par-71 Waikoloa Kings Course. It was the Cougars' best team round of the three-day event and the second-best score by any team on Friday.
Sophomore Brad McIntosh, the 2001 Conference USA Tournament individual champion, helped lead the way for the Cougars by firing a 2-under-par 69 Friday and tied with seven other players for ninth place with a three-day score of 4-over-par 217.
Junior Simon Robinson, the C-USA Golfer of the Month in October, shot a 1-over-par 72 in the final round and was the only Cougar to improve his score in each round.
Brett Callas finished in a tie for 37th place with a score of 222, while Scott Ferguson tied for 73rd at 228. Daniel Angenscheidt, competing in his first collegiate tournament as a Cougar tied for 110th with a score of 237.
Georgia Tech won the team championship with a score of 4-under-par 860, eight strokes better than second place Oklahoma. The Yellow Jackets were the only team to finish under par for the entire tournament. Arkansas, Fresno State and Nevada rounded out the top five team leaders.
Troy Matteson of Georgia Tech captured the individual title with a score of 3-under-par 210 with Nick Watney of Fresno State finishing second at 211. Jason Allred (Pepperdine), Chez Reavie (Arizona State), John Kidwell (Oklahoma) and Conner Robbins (Washington) completed the top five leaders.
