HOUSTON - University of Houston freshman swimmer Stacey Williams was honored Tuesday as Conference USA's first Swimmer of the Week this season after a solid performance in the Cougars' season-opening meet.
The Perth, Australia, native made a strong impression in her first collegiate meet, capturing top individual honors in the 100- yard freestyle (54.48) and 200-yard freestyle (1:56.28) and serving as the anchor leg on the Cougars' victorious 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:41.52). Her time in the 200-yard event would have been a UH season-best in 2001-02.
In addition, Williams helped lead the Cougars to a dominating 167-76 win over North Texas on Oct. 12 at the UH Natatorium. It marked the first time the Cougars started 1-0 to open the year since 1992, when UH opened with a win at Rice. It also gave first-year swimming head coach Mark Taylor his first collegiate victory.
Williams becomes only the second Cougar swimmer in school history to earn the league's weekly award. Stacey Ebeling collected the first-ever C-USA honor a year ago to open the swimming and diving season.
Williams and her Cougar teammates return to action this weekend at the Husker Shootout and Sprint Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Friday and Saturday.
