NAVARRE, Fla. -- Led by Brad McIntosh, a true freshman who won individual medalist honors, the University of Houston golf team coasted by 16 shots to its fifth-straight Conference USA golf championship Wednesday afternoon at The Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre, Fla. Houston posted an eight-over par team score of 872 to win its 19th league title and fifth in a row since joining Conference USA in 1996-97.
McIntosh, a freshman from Wollongong, Australia, became the 14th Cougar to win conference medalist honors for the 20th time overall in Houston golf's storied golf history. The international standout from the same hometown of UH-ex and PGA great Steve Elkington, is however the first Cougar freshman ever to win a conference individual championship.
McIntosh fired a three under par 69 to win the individual title with a 54-hole total of 214 (-2). He was the lone man in the 60-player field to break par Wednesday, posting five birdies and 11 pars to win medalist honors by one stroke over Louisville's Chris Campbell (215, -1).
For finishing third on the Cougars in scoring average and for steady championship rounds of 73, 72 and 69, McIntosh was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year.
UH sophomore Simon Robinson finished third individually with three-round total of one-over par 217. He and McIntosh were named to the C-USA All-Tournament team. Cougar senior Andy Sanders and junior Wade Ormsby earned all-conference accolades. The duo are first and second, respectively, on the team in scoring average and have been ranked among the Top 75 collegiate players in the country all season. At the C-USA championship Ormsby tied for sixth (219, +3) while Sanders tied for tenth (222, +6).
With four players in the top 10, Houston outdistanced second place finisher UAB by a full 16 strokes. The Cougars compiled a team total of 290 on Wednesday, increasing its seven-stroke lead from the day before. UH led the title chase from wire to wire. Full scores are as follows.
