NEW ORLEANS, La. - Jennifer Wittenburg blasted 24 kills and 16 digs to lead the University of Houston volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Conference USA rival Tulane at Fogelman Arena on Saturday.
Wittenburg tallied the 31st double-double of her UH career and her second straight after posting 27 kills and 10 digs in the Cougars' 3-1 win at Southern Mississippi on Friday. The Houston native also moved past Julie Gates into fourth place in school career history with 1,238 kills. Her season total of 478 kills also ranks as the ninth-best total in UH single-season history.
Middle hitter Jenny Tanneberger tallied 11 kills, while Amanda Baggett finished with 14 digs for the Cougars.
Houston won its eighth match in its last nine outings to improve to 13-9 overall and 10-3 C-USA. Tulane falls to 16-11 overall and 7-7 in C-USA.
After winning game one by a 30-20 margin, the Cougars staged a dramatic comeback and then held off a late Tulane rally to win the second game. Trailing 25-20, UH went on a 9-1 run over the next 10 points and enjoyed game point with a 30-26 lead.
However, Tulane scored the next four points for a game point of its own at 30-29. The two teams would go back and forth from there, before UH scored three straight points for a 36-34 win.
In game three, the Cougars raced out to a 22-11 lead and never looked back in sweeping the regular season series against the Green Wave. UH won a hard-fought 3-2 match over Tulane on Sept. 23 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars enjoy a busy home weekend as they play host to three C-USA matches. The week starts with a 7:30 p.m. match Tuesday against TCU at Hofheinz Pavilion and continues Friday and Saturday against DePaul and Marquette, respectively.
