HOUSTON, Texas - After winning the first two games handily, the University of Houston volleyball team seemed to be in control of the match, but TCU stormed back to win the next three games and take a 3-2 victory over the Cougars on Tuesday at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Despite nearly doubling TCU in hitting percentage at .264 to .133, the Cougars dropped their first Conference USA home match in six outings this season.
Jennifer Wittenburg led all players with 26 kills and 18 digs for her third consecutive double-double and the 32nd of her UH career, but it would not be enough. Jane Anne Karasek added a double-double of her own with 10 kills and 12 digs, while Jenny Tanneberger poured in 14 kills.
Amanda Baggett registered 10 digs with Donna Sellen adding 12 digs in the losing effort.
Jennifer Cuca led the way for TCU with 16 kills and 10 digs, with Marci King adding 13 kills and Amber Sims coming off the bench to register 11 kills. Tori Barlow also added a team-best 14 digs for the Horned Frogs.
UH (13-4, 10-4 C-USA) won the first two games by a combined 31 points and appeared well on its way to victory. However, the Horned Frogs used late runs in both game three and game four to pull even in the match.
After falling behind 4-2 in the fifth and final game, TCU scored the next six points for an 8-4 lead. King led the way during the rally with three kills and a block assist.
UH rallied and tied the match at 11-all, 14-all and 15-all but was unable to string together two unanswered points to end the match. TCU then took advantage of a kill from Cuca and a UH attack error to win the match and snap a seven-match winning streak.
TCU improved to 7-19 overall and 3-11 and league action and won its first road contest of the season.
The Cougars continue their homestand Friday night with a 7:30 p.m. match against DePaul and end their regular-season home slate with a 7 p.m. match against Marquette. Both matches will be played at Hofheinz Pavilion.
