HOUSTON, Texas - A day after winning its first three-game match of the season, the University of Houston women's volleyball team continued its recent, torrid play with another 3-0 sweeping of Conference USA rival Memphis on Saturday at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars (7-8, 4-2 C-USA) defeated the Tigers for the second time this season and the seventh consecutive time in the all-time series. After setting a new season-best attack percentage Saturday against Saint Louis, the Cougars blasted away to a .259 hitting percentage while holding the Tigers to only a .086 percentage.
Senior outside hitter Jennifer Wittenburg led all players with 16 kills, while junior outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek added 10 kills with only one error and a match-best 13 digs for the sixth double-double of her collegiate career.
Game one went back and forth until the Cougars used an offensive surge midway through the game to take control. Trailing 19-15, UH scored the game's next five points to take a 20-19 lead. When Memphis pulled to within 26-24, the Cougars rattled off four of the game's next six points to win the game 30-26.
In game two, UH raced out to an 18-10 lead and was never threatened again. The early part of that game seemed to be the Jennifer Wittenburg show as the Houston native blasted five of her kills during the game's first 12 points.
Another Cougar rally in game three iced both the game and the match for the home team. Falling behind again 18-16, the Cougars took advantage of kills from Wittenburg and sophomore middle hitter Amanda Baggett, a block solo from freshman middle hitter Loure Dews and several Memphis errors for the next five points to take a 21-18 lead.
Ginger Garrett led Memphis (12-3, 3-3 C-USA) with 16 kills while Amie Hamilton added 13 digs in the losing effort.
The Cougars will now enjoy some time away from the competitive court as they play only one match during the next 13 days. UH travels north to meet C-USA rival TCU in a 7 p.m. match on Oct. 13 and then returns home to play host to league foes East Carolina on Oct. 19.
