BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Houston volleyball team continued its winning ways Friday with an easy 3-0 win over UAB at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala., for its sixth straight win of the season.
The Cougars (11-8, 8-2 C-USA) won their sixth straight match overall and their sixth straight Conference USA match. In addition, UH posted its 11 consecutive victory over the Blazers in the all-time series.
Jane Anne Karasek was the only Cougar to tally double digits with 13 kills but it would be more than enough as UAB managed only a paltry .015 attack percentage as a team.
Jennifer Wittenburg led all players with 14 kills and was one of four Cougars to tally double figures in that category. Amanda Baggett added 12 digs with Gabi Carbone and Karasek chipping in with 11 kills apiece.
Karasek posted the seventh double-double of her collegiate career, while Carbone tallied double digits in digs for the third consecutive match.
In game one, the Cougar defense kept the UAB offense from gaining any momentum as the Blazers failed to score five consecutive points at any time during the game.
UH jumped out to leads of 8-1 and 20-10 in game two and never looked back. In the third and final game, the Cougars used a 9-3 run midway through the game to take a 20-9 lead and take control of the match.
Martina Shields led UAB with 10 kills, while Shelly Greene added a team-best 10 digs.
The Cougars conclude their two-match road swing Sunday when they face South Florida in a 1 p.m. match at Tampa, Fla.
