Casey Smithson joined University of Houston Football as its Director of Player Personnel in January 2020. In December 2023, he transitioned into his current position as Director of Recruiting. The 2025 season will be his sixth with the program. In February 2025, Smithson was elevated to Director of Player Personnel.
In his current role, Smithson assists with roster management, identifies, evaluates, and collects data on all prospects, and monitors the transfer portal. As the Director of Recruiting, he assists with executing the recruiting calendar, manages recruiting boards, and develops lists for areas and coaches. In addition to managing evaluation days for recruiting, Smithson is also the liaison with compliance for recruiting activity.
Prior to Houston, Smithson spent five years as the Recruiting Coordinator for the West Virginia University Football program. In Morgantown, Smithson worked with the coaching staff, identifying and evaluating recruiting prospects. He planned and organized recruiting plans for coaches, in addition to planning and organizing all summer camps and campus visits.
In August 2007, Smithson started his work as a Recruiting Intern and Student Assistant for the West Virginia Football. While organizing recruiting videos and helping graduate assistants with administrative duties, Smithson assisted in supervising the recruiting desk and recruiting visits during the offseason.
After graduation, Smithson continued to work at West Virginia, becoming a Recruiting and Operations Graduate Assistant. He worked with the Recruiting Coordinator and Director of Football Operations, coordinating all official and unofficial visits during the year. Smithson also coordinated tryouts for walk-ons in the fall and spring.
Smithson graduated in May 2011 from West Virginia University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He earned his Master of Science in Sports Management in May 2014 at West Virginia.
