Main LocationMain Office - 2017 Alumni/Athletic Center (Second Floor, Walk to the right off the stairs, left through the double doors, ¾ down the hallway on the left).
Individual Counseling
Individual counseling sessions are offered to student-athletes to enhance their mental health and sports performance. Those challenges include, but are not limited to, difficulty managing anxiety, homesickness, depression/sadness, interpersonal relationships & dating, lack of motivation, performance slumps, etc.
Case Management/Care Coordination
Case management involves connecting student-athletes with resources and services, and to provide guidance on how to navigate university life. Care coordination, like case management, is also available to our academic, sports medicine, and sports performance staffs to help them as they assist Houston student-athletes.
Mental Health & Wellness Literacy & Marketing
SAMHWS promotes mental health and wellness via fliers in student-athlete spaces, social media and Teamworks.
Team Mental Health Screenings
SAMHWS assists with the administration of annual team mental health screening and is available to provide mid- and end of the year screenings.
Mental Health Emergency/Crisis Response & Management
SAMHWS staff are available to respond to Houston student-athlete/team crisis as well as similar events that occur with visiting teams (and their mental health clinician is not available).
Team Consultations & Interventions
SAMHWS provides presentations on a variety of topics to teams on an individualized basis per coaches' requests and team needs.
Coach Trainings
SAMHWS provides continuing education on a wide range of topics to coaches and athletics staff members to support them in their roles with student-athletes. Those topics include but are not limited to best practices for supporting student-athletes’ mental health, self-care for coaches/staff, and fostering competitiveness within your team.
Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) Facilitation
SAMHWS will facilitate referrals and visits to CAPS when student-athletes want to explore a larger pool of mental health providers who they feel can meet their needs.
Services that are not provided by SAMHWS include, but are not limited to:
● Letters to request an emotional support animal
● Letters to support the need for academic accommodations, requested by student-athletes who have not been treated by an athletic department mental health provider. Letters for accommodations should come from the provider who diagnosed and/or treated mental health conditions for which the athlete is requesting accommodations.
Additional mental health services can be arranged through SAMHWS. These services include:
● Sports and performance-based counseling
● Addictive behavior counseling (i.e. drug, alcohol, gaming, gambling, pornography)
● Psychiatry and medication management
● Transition/Referral assistance
