Campillo Martinez Leads Women’s Golf in ANNIKA Intercollegiate First Round

Cougars begin first season under Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Rachel Pollock; Second Round tees off Tuesday morning at Royal Golf Club
LAKE ELMO, Minn. – University of Houston senior Daniela Campillo Martinez drained four birdies and finished the First Round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate with a 73 to tie for 16th and lead the Cougars at Royal Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
Making her Houston debut after competing for her first three seasons at ULM, Campillo Martinez began her day off No. 10 and quickly moved into red numbers with birdies on two of her first five holes.
The Viladecans, Barcelona, Spain, native added another birdie on the par-3 fourth hole and sank her final birdie on her final hole of the day to stand among the Top-20 leaders.
Making her Houston debut after transferring from Wingate, Jackie Gonzalez Howard was tied for 42nd at 77 while junior Emilia Väistö and senior Ellen Yates were tied for 50th at 78. Sophomore Sadie Adams stood in 57th at 81.
As a team, the Cougars opened the season with a score of 306 and were tied with Kansas State for 10.
Wake Forest held the team lead at 280 to finish eight strokes ahead of Virginia, USC and South Carolina. Oregon (291), North Carolina (292), Auburn (293), UCLA (296) and Missouri (301) completed the Top-Nine leaders.
Virginia's Zoe Cusack held the First-Round lead at 67 with Wake Forest teammates Benedicte Brent-Petersen and Chloe Kovelesky tied for second at 69. Amelia Harris (South Carolina), Michelle Xing (UCLA) and Havanna Torstensson (Wake Forest) were tied for fourth at 70.
Schools will play 18 holes each day with the Final Round teeing off Wednesday morning.
