Junior Emilia Väistö shoots even-par 72 in Second Round; Senior Daniela Campillo Martinez among Top 25
LAKE ELMO, Minn. – University of Houston Women's Golf junior Emilia Väistö posted an even-par 72 to lead the Cougars during the Second Round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate at Royal Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.
As a team, Houston bettered its First-Round score by nine strokes with a total of 297 in the Second Round and stood in ninth with a 36-hole score of 603.
Väistö drained a pair of birdies Wednesday for the Cougars' low round of the day. She rose 12 places in the individual standings and was tied for 38th at 150.
For the second straight day, senior Daniela Campillo Martinez posted a 73 and was tied for 24th at 146 to lead Houston. Campillo Martinez is making her Houston debut at this week's tournament after playing her first three seasons at ULM before transferring this summer.
Senior Jackie Gonzalez – who was also making her Houston debut after transferring from Wingate – was tied for 48th at 153 while senior Ellen Yates was tied for 50th at 154. Freshman Sadie Adams stood in 59th at 161.
Wake Forest continued to hold the team lead with a score of 556 and finished the Second Round 15 strokes ahead of Oregon. Virginia stood in third at 572 with South Carolina (575), USC (577), Auburn (578), North Carolina (589) and UCLA (591) completing the Top Eight.
Wake Forest teammates Chloe Kovelesky and Benedicte Brent-Petersen were tied for the individual lead at 7-under 137 with fellow Demon Deacon Havanna Torstensson in third at 139. Michelle Xing (UCLA), Tong An (Oregon), Jasmine Koo (USC) and Jacvlyn LaHa (Virginia) were tied for fourth at 142.
The tournament concludes with the Final Round beginning Wednesday morning.
