Award-winning Kent State star will compete as senior during 2026-27 season
HOUSTON – Forward Delrecco Gillespie has joined the University of Houston Men's Basketball program after signing a scholarship agreement, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson announced Thursday.Gillespie – whose name is pronounced Del-Reek-O Guh (g as in good)-Less-Pee – will compete as a senior with the Cougars in 2026-27 and have one season of eligibility.
In more than 100 games over three collegiate seasons, he has compiled 984 points and 741 rebounds
"Delrecco can rebound it, and he can score it, and his second jump reminds me a lot of Jojo (Joseph Tugler). He brings good size and good length," Sampson said. "The MAC is a great basketball conference. The fact that Delrecco was one of the best players in that league speaks volumes. Once he gets here and we get him going, he is going to be a tremendous asset for us next year."
Gillespie comes to Houston after competing for his first three seasons at Kent State. He helped lead the Golden Flashes to a 24-10 overall and 14-4 mark in the Horizon League after averaging 17.7 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.
The Benton Harbor, Mich., native ranked among the nation's Top-Four rebounding leaders all season and topped the country with 22 double-doubles in 34 games. Gillespie opened his junior campaign with nine straight double-doubles, including a 30-point, 13-rebound game against Cleveland State followed by a 26-point, 17-rebound effort against Wright State.
He was recognized as an Oscar Robertson Honored National Player of the Week in mid-November 2025 and was named the Oscar Robertson Mid-Major Player of the Month for November 2025.
For his impressive work all season, Gillespie was named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team and to the league's All-Defensive Squad and was a three-time MAC Player of the Week.
Before signing with Kent State, Gillespie competed at East Coweta High School in Georgia, where he averaged 13.7 points and 11.6 rebounds per game on the way to being named to the All-State First Team.
