Volleyball plays 11 non-conference matches, including six at Fertitta Center
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team begins its 2025 campaign on Aug. 29 as part of an 11-match non-conference slate, the program announced Friday. Six of the 11 tilts will be played inside Fertitta Center.Â
Â
The Cougars will battle two 2024 NCAA Tournament squads and four teams from power conferences. Houston will also host a pair of home tournaments, including the return of the annual Flo Hyman Classic.Â
Â
Head Coach David Rehr's squad begins the 2025 season on the road, heading to Durham, N.C., for a tournament at Duke. Houston will battle FIU (Aug. 29) to open the season before a Aug. 30 tilt against the host Blue Devils and wrapping up the weekend against Bryant on Aug. 31.Â
Â
The opening weekend marks two all-time series not renewed in decades as well as the debut contest in a third. Houston has not met FIU on the court since 1978 and holds a 3-0 record against the Panthers. It is the second meeting against Duke and the first since 1996, another tilt in Durham with the Cougars walking away with a 3-0 victory, while Houston faces off against Bryant for the first time.Â
Â
The Cougars start their home slate the following weekend with three matches as part of the Flo Hyman Classic. Starting with San Diego State on Sept. 4, Houston continues against Omaha on Sept. 5 and LSU on Sept. 6. It's Houston's first matchup against the Aztecs since 1985 while the Cougars defeated Omaha in a five-set thriller last season and downed LSU in four sets in 2022.Â
Â
Heading back on the road, the Cougars continue a multi-year series against Purdue (Sept. 13) and Kentucky (Sept. 14) with this year's iteration taking place in Lexington, Ky. Purdue won the last meeting in 2024 and holds a 4-2 edge in the series dating back to 1979. Houston leads the historic series against Kentucky, 7-5, including a streak of five straight wins from 1994 through 2011.Â
Â
Closing out the nonconference campaign, Houston hosts Liberty (Sept. 19), North Alabama (Sept. 20) and McNeese (Sept. 20) at Fertitta Center for a weekend tourney. The tilt marks the Cougars' second meeting with the Flames as Houston won the debut matchup, 3-0, in a neutral site contest in College Station, Texas, in 2023. The Cougars also hold an 8-2 edge in the historical series against McNeese while never meeting North Alabama on the court until this season.
Â
