Men’s Golf in Fifth after First Day at Big 12 Championships

Senior Wolfgang Glawe tied for fourth at 141; Third Round tees off Wednesday
TULSA, Okla. – The University of Houston Men's Golf program finished the first day of the Big 12 Conference Championships in fifth with a score of 587 after bettering its First-Round total by eight strokes at Southern Hills Country Club on Tuesday evening.
After opening the tournament with a 295 in the morning, the 41st-ranked Cougars fired a score of 287 in the afternoon on the 7,556-yard, par-70 layout.
Senior Wolfgang Glawe posted a 36-hole score of 1-over 141 and was tied for fourth to lead the Cougars.
Opening the tournament with a 70 in the morning, Glawe finished with a 71 in the afternoon and was tied with Arizona State's Michael Mjaaseth.
The St. Leon-Rot, Germany, native drained four birdies in his First Round, including back-to-back on his second and third holes of the tournaments, to lead the Cougars.
Sophomore Chi Chun Chen joined Glawe among the Top-20 leaders, thanks to an even-par 70 in Tuesday's Second Round, and was tied for 14th at 144.
Senior Laurenz Schiergen was tied for 34th at 148 while junior Hudson Weibel was tied for 41st at 149. Sophomore Grant Doggett was tied for 71st at 156.
No. 5 Arizona State held the first-day lead at 561 to finish four shots ahead of #4 Oklahoma State. TCU (580), #34 Colorado (581), Cincinnati (584), Kansas State (587), #28 BYU (587), #33 Texas Tech (587), and #23 Arizona (587) completed the Top 10.
Arizona State teammates Connor Williams and Josele Ballester stood 1-2 on the individual leaderboard at 136 and 139, respectively, while Oklahoma State's Preston Stout was in third at 140.
The tournament continues with the Third Round on Wednesday and the Final Round teeing off Thursday morning. The winner of the league's annual postseason event earns an automatic bid to NCAA Regional play on May 12-14.

Houston owns a rich history at conference championships with 21 team titles and 22 individual crowns.
In 2023, the Cougars swept the team and individual titles at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Fla., during the American Athletic Conference Championships in their final year in the league.
As a team, Houston finished with a total of 831 to win by 12 strokes over Cincinnati. All-American Santiago De La Fuente posted a score of 16-under 200 to earn medalist honors and finish three shots ahead of teammate Austyn Reily.
A year ago, the Cougars tied for sixth at Whispering Pines Golf Club with a score of 1,159. All-American Santiago De La Fuente posted a total of 7-under 281 with four straight sub-par rounds to tie for fourth at 7-under 281.

Following the Big 12 Championships, the Cougars will enter the NCAA postseason, set for May 12-14. Houston learns its NCAA Regional destination during the NCAA Selection Show set to air at Noon, April 30.
