
Cougars Lead After Day One at Big 12 Championships

Houston wins team diving event with a pair of Top Four finishes in the 200 medley, 800 free relays
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team won its first-ever Big 12 Conference Event Championship to secure an early lead at the Big 12 Championships on Tuesday at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. Fifth-year Hedda Grelz, sophomore Michelle McLeod and fifth-year Emilia Waters combined to win the team diving event to help Houston pick up 170 points on the first day of the championships to pace all schools in attendance.

Added last season, team diving features a trio of divers each taking two dives, with two on each of the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards and two on the platform. Grelz, McLeod and Waters posted a score of 306.00 in the event, anchored by a final dive, a back two-and-a-half somersault one-and-a-half twist pike, from Michelle McLeod that scored 67.20 points. The trio amassed 64 championship points with their performance.

The Cougars' 800-yard freestyle relay team of junior Liya Goupil, sophomore Evelyn Entrekin, sophomore Elizabeth Jimenez and freshman Sienna Bruner posted a time of 7:11.96 to finish third and secure 54 points.Â

Freshman Lottie Cullen, senior Henrietta Fangli, junior Noor El Gendy and junior Jenna Kerkman took fourth place in the 200-yard medley relay, swimming a 1:37.85 and narrowly missing a program record (1:37.47).

After the first day, Houston leads with 170 points, followed by #17 Arizona State's 168 and Arizona's 157. Utah, BYU and TCU are all tied for fourth with 150 points each while Cincinnati sits in seventh (141), Kansas is in eighth (134) and West Virginia and Iowa State are tied for ninth (122).
