Senior Spotlight: sixth-year senior running back set for final home game
Growth, development, improvement.
These are all words that are frequently tossed around the world of football, from the youth ranks all the way up to the pros. It serves as a reminder that no matter how talented, smart and strong one can be in football, there's always more room to be better than the day before.
For many, these words are often associated with the sport alone. For others, it goes beyond the game of football.
Houston senior running back Stacy Sneed is one of those guys.
His journey over the stretch of six seasons in Houston can be encapsulated by these words, both on and off the field.
From his first days on campus to now, two days away from his final home as a Cougar, Sneed took a moment to reflect on what changed in his life in that time.
"I matured more," said Sneed. "I just grew up, to be honest. Didn't change too much, besides just me getting in trouble and growing up."
The Arlington, Texas native's first two seasons in Houston proved to be hurdle in the early half of his collegiate career. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and being deemed academically ineligible in 2021, Sneed had a rough start to his career as a Cougar.
Come 2022, Sneed's number was called, and from that moment, his impact shined on bright under the lights.
Sneed has appeared in 41 games for Houston, tallying 212 carries for 1,202 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground as well as 54 receptions for 334 yards and two scores through the air.
Come Saturday, he'll be one game closer to writing the end of his college football chapter with one final home game at TDECU Stadium.
His growth in becoming the player and person he is today is the product of reflection, a moment of realization that saw him take a turn towards a positive direction on and off the field.
"Stop making bad decisions. Lock in on football. Let the main things be the main things. Block out all outside noise."
Through this process, Sneed found a new voice in the locker room. It was his own.
Having once been the new guy on the team, Sneed took it upon himself to become a mentor in the locker room, someone who could be a source of guidance for the new guys that came after him.
"I've never been the guy to speak up or anything but just helping the guys around me. Trying to be a leader. When I came in my freshman year, I was the quiet dude."
After all, he owed it to himself for being one of the few guys who came to the program in 2020 to stick around the program.
With Senior Day looming, Sneed is bearing the fruits of his patience and hard work, knowing when opportunities to take the easy way out were available to him, he chose to stay put and trust the process in the place that gave him his chance.
What excites him most? Knowing his loyalty to the program afforded him the chance to have this final ride as a senior.
"Just staying loyal. Seeing how this season turned out. Just staying down throughout all the bad years to see the type of season we are having this year."
Through all the ups and downs, Sneed remained humble and grateful for every experience and person that has helped shape him to the individual he is today.
"The past running back coaches I had and the past running back rooms I've had. Just growing older, becoming a man, learning from guys like Kelan Walker, who showed me if things aren't going your way on the field, there's other ways you can lead in the room just by speaking up and helping the young guys."
As for what comes next for Sneed? Focusing on one of the biggest blessings of all: Fatherhood.
"Being a father. Just raising my daughter, Soleigh. Seeing what she does because to keep my name alive that's who it's going to live through my daughter, so I want to just raise her right."
From being a quiet freshman to embracing a leadership role and mentality through both family and football, Sneed's college career is a story that can be defined by the words growth, development, and improvement.
Living out the final stretch of his college football career, Sneed will always have a special place in his heart for the city that welcomed him and changed him not only as a football player, but as a person.
"My heart is always going to be in Houston. I am thankful for all the fans and all the people that have shown love during the years I was here."
