
Women’s Golf Finishes First Day at The Match Play

Sophomore Alexa Saldana claims 7&3 win against Tulsa in First Round at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club
NORMAN, Okla. – University of Houston Women's Golf sophomore Alexa Saldana took a 7&3 win to lead the Cougars against No. 2 seed Tulsa during the First Round of The Match Play at OU Jimmie Austin Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
As a team, Houston dropped a 4-1 decision to the Golden Hurricane.
Even through the first three holes, Saldana made par at No. 4 and was never tied or trailed for the rest of the match. She pushed her lead to 2 up with a birdie at No. 7 and sank another par at No. 9 to build a 3 up lead through her first nine.
The Mexico City native made par at No. 10 to open her second nine and reeled off three straight wins at Nos. 13-15 to take the win.
Sophomore Moa Svedenskiold fell 3&2 to Lovisa Gunnar while junior Hyeonji Kang lost 2&1 to Grace Kilcrease. Senior Nicole Abelar fell 5&3 to Jenni Roller and sophomore Brooke Morales lost 6&1 to Sydney Seigel.
No. 1 seed Oklahoma took a 4-1 win over No. 8 Oklahoma State while No. 3 North Texas claimed a 3-1-1 win over No. 6 Tulane. No. 4 Texas Tech took a 4-1 win over No. 5 Kansas State.
The Cougars opened the day with 18 holes of stroke play to determine seeding for the match play competition. Houston posted a score of 305 to earn the No. 7 seed in match play.
Svedenskiold drained three straight birdies late in her round to finish at 218 and tied for 15th.
The Cougars will face No. 6 Tulane at 8 a.m., Tuesday with the Final Round starting around 1:30 p.m.
The Match Play at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club will be the Cougars' final regular-season event of the season.
