
Women’s Golf Sweeps at The Match Play on Tuesday

Cougars take wins over (6) Tulane and (5) Kansas State to finish fifth

After falling in their first match Monday, the Cougars rebounded nicely with a 3-1-1 win over No. 6 seed Tulane and closed the tournament with a 3-2-0 win over No. 5 seed Kansas State to finish fifth on the 6,234-yard, par-72 course.
Oklahoma knocked off Tulsa to win the championship. The Cougars joined the Golden Hurricane and North Texas with 2-1 records at The Match Play at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
This was the Cougars' final regular-season event of the season.
(7) HOUSTON 3, (5) KANSAS STATE 2
After losing the first hole to Alenka Navarro on No. 5, Svedenskiold evened the match at No. 6 and took a 3-up lead with back-to-back wins at Nos. 10-11.
The Halmstad, Sweden, native won back-to-back holes at Nos. 17-18 to clinch the match.
Kang shook off a slow start that put her 2 down against Julia Ballester Barrio through her first two holes at Nos. 5-6. The Jeju, South Korea, native won the next two holes to even the match and then alternated wins and losses on the next three holes before taking the lead for good with a par at No. 11.
Kang built as much as a 3-hole lead in winning her second match of the tournament.
Senior Nicole Abelar won the first hole in her match against Haley Vargas and was never tied again in taking a 5&3 win.
Sophomore Alexa Saldana fell 3&2 to Carla Bernat, and sophomore Brooke Morales dropped a 5&3 decision to Noa Van Beek.
(7) HOUSTON 3, (6) TULANE 1
In Tuesday morning's Second Round, Svedenskiold, Kang and claimed victories to lead the Cougars to a 3-1-1 win over No. 6 seed Tulane.
Svedenskiold jumped out to a 2-hole lead in her first three holes and never looked back in taking a 5&3 win over Julia Sanchez Morales.
Down one with just two to play, Saldana won the last two holes of her match against Miriam Emmert with a birdie on the 536-yard, par-5 13th hole to take a 1 up win.
Kang won three holes in a four-hole stretch midway through the Second Round and cruised to a 3&2 win over Daozeng Liu.
Senior Nicole Abelar tied in her match against Ruhee Pandit while sophomore Brooke Morales dropped a 4&3 decision to Matilde Innocenti.

Following The Match Play at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., Houston takes its first steps in the postseason when its tees off at the Big 12 Championships, set for April 18-20 at The Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas.
The winner of the league's annual postseason event receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals to be held at one of six sites across the country on May 6-8.
Those NCAA Regional sites include Auburn University Club (Auburn, Ala., hosted by Auburn); Tumble Creek Club (Cle Elum, Wash., hosted by Washington); Traditions Club (Bryan-College Station, Texas., hosted by Texas A&M); Forest Akers Golf Course (East Lansing, Mich., hosted by Michigan State); Spanish Trail Country Club (Las Vegas, Nev., hosted by UNLV) and East Course – Bermuda Run Country Club (Winston-Salem, N.C., hosted by Wake Forest).
