Cougars drop first match of the year in true road opener
SAN MARCOS, Texas – The No. 13 University of Houston Volleyball team stumbled in its true road opener, losing its first match of the year to Texas State, 3-0.

Graduate Kenna Sauer led the match with 13 kills for Houston (4-1). Senior Annie Cooke and graduate Morgan Janda each tallied 16 assists, while senior Kate Georgiades tallied 11 digs.Â

SET ONE
The Bobcats (4-1) surged early, taking the opening points to jump out to a 4-0 lead. The Cougars closed the gap to 9-8, but Texas State had reextended its lead to 15-10 at the media timeout. The Bobcats kept posting short runs, eventually taking the first frame, 25-18.

SET TWO
Texas State showed no signs of slowing down in the second. After the Bobcats jumped out to a four-point lead, Houston rallied with a 3-0 run behind kills from Sauer, graduate Nena Mbonu and junior Katie Corelli to cut the deficit to 8-7. After trading another set of 3-0 runs, Texas State used a 4-0 surge to extend its lead to five at 15-10 and held off a Houston comeback attempt to win the set, 25-22.Â

SET THREE
Texas State continued to hit well in the third. While Houston improved its hitting, posting a .273 efficiency in the final set, the Bobcats hit at .571 to improve to .392 on the match, only tallying five attack errors. Ultimately, Texas State kept its momentum, taking the final set 25-18 to earn the match win.

UP NEXT
Houston remains on the road, heading to West Lafayette, Ind., for a bracket-style tournament at Purdue. The Cougars open with #15 Kentucky at 3 p.m. Friday and then will play either SMU or #25 Purdue on Saturday.
