Sophomore shoots bogey-free 65 in Second Round to tie for second entering Tuesday’s Final Round
PALM CITY, Fla. – University of Houston Men's Golf sophomore Wolfgang Glawe fired a bogey-free 65 in the Second Round of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational to surge into a tie for second at 7-under 135 at Floridian National Golf Club on Monday evening.
Starting his day off No. 1, Glawe posted a 70 in the First Round on the 6,943-yard, par-71 course, thanks to four birdies, including two on his final four holes.
After four straight pars to open his Second Round in the afternoon, Glawe drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5-6 and enjoyed three straight birdies early in his second nine at Nos. 11-13. The St. Leon-Rot, Germany, native added his final birdie of the day at the par-5 15th hole and closed the round with three straight pars to join North Carolina's David Ford and Georgia Southern's Ben Carr at 135.
Glawe set a personal best with Monday's afternoon score, topping his previous low of 69 from the Second Round of the Cabo Collegiate on March 6.
It also was the Cougars' low round of the 2022-23 season, besting junior Santiago De La Fuente's 67 in the Final Found of the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas on Oct. 4, 2022.
Texas Tech's Ludvig Aberg held the individual lead after 36 holes at 10-under 132. Teammate Tyran Snyders, Austin Greaster (North Carolina) and Maxwell Moldovan (Ohio State) were tied for fifth at 136.
De La Fuente was tied for 31st at 143 after shooting a 70 in the Second Round. Sophomore Jacob Borow was tied for 46th at 145 while senior Austyn Reily was tied for 57th at 147. Sophomore Drew Murdock was tied for 70th at 149.
Playing as individual, super senior Braxton Watkins was tied for 26th at 141 while super senior Campbell Gibson was tied for 80th at 152.
The Valspar Collegiate Invitational is annually one of the nation's premier events. In 2023, 12 of the 16 schools competing rank among the GolfStat Top 50 with six of the Top 10 and eight of the Top 25.
The Cougars posted a score of 286 in the Monday's morning round and bettered that by four strokes in the afternoon to stand in eighth with a total of 568.
#3 Texas Tech held the first-day team lead at 550 to finish three strokes ahead of #4 North Carolina. #7 Florida State (558), #2 Arizona State (559), #10 Texas (563), #34 Ohio State (563) and #14 Texas (564) rounded out the Top Seven with #18 Georgia Southern (569), and #26 Northwestern (571) completing the Top 10.
The Cougars wrap up the tournament with Tuesday's Final Round beginning with at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) shotgun start. Admission is free to all, and everyone is invited.
