Junior posts bogey-free 66 to lead Cougars in Second Round; Houston surges into sixth following Second Round
SADDLEBROOKE, Ariz. – University of Houston Women's Golf junior Nicole Abelar posted a bogey-free-66 to lead the Cougars during the Second Round of the MountainView Collegiate at MountainView Golf Club on Saturday afternoon.
Abelar was one of four Cougars who shot even-par or better on the 6,352-yard, par-72 course. Freshman Alexa Saldana finished with her second straight sub-par round with a 71 Saturday and was tied for 13th at 3-under 141. Freshman Moa Svedenskiold posted a 69 in the Second Round and was tied for 26th at 143.
Freshman Natalie Saint German was tied for 68th at 148 while super senior Annie Kim was tied for 73rd at 149 after shooting even-par 72 on Saturday.
Houston fired the day's second-lowest team round with a score of 10-under 278 and surged into sixth with a 36-hole total of 569.
Starting her Second Round off No 10, Abelar birdied each of her first two holes and never moved out of red numbers for the rest of the day. Following nine straight pars, she alternated birdies and pars every hole starting with a birdie on the par-5 third hole for the rest of the round.
Saldana endured a bogey on No. 14 early in her Second Round but returned to even par with a birdie on No. 4 and moved into red numbers and stayed there with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5-6.
Svedenskiold overcame a slow start Saturday which saw her with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 13-14. Fortunately, the Halmstad, Sweden, native quickly rebounded with three birdies in her next four holes to move under par.
After a bogey on Nov. 4 returned her to even par, Svedenskiold birdied her last three holes to finish with a 69 and moved into a tie for 26th.
Iowa State held the lead after the Second Round with a score of 545. Ohio State stood in second at 560 with TCU (563), San Jose State (564) and Tulsa (565) rounding out the Top Five. Nebraska (570), North Texas (571), UNLV (573) and New Mexico (574) completeted the Top 10.
Iowa State's Karisa Chuk-ak-sorn posted a 62 in the Second Round and held the individual lead at 17-under 127. TCU's Caitlin Macnab stood in second at 134 while Ohio State's Caitlyn McGinty was in third at 135.
The three-day, 54-hole event wraps up with the Final Round beginning at 10 a.m. (CDT) Sunday.
