Cougars tip off in first meeting against Quakers at 6 p.m., Saturday
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Men's Basketball program closes the year 2023 and its non-conference schedule when it meets Penn for the first time in school history at 6 p.m., Saturday, inside Fertitta Center.
The Cougars enter this weekend's non-conference finale as winners of each of their first 12 games to open the season. The 2023-24 team is the third in school history to accomplish that feat (2018-19; 1967-68) and the second under Head Coach Kelvin Sampson.
The 2023-24 Cougars are currently tied with the 1954-55 squad for the second-most regular-season non-conference wins in school single-season history (in seasons in which Houston competed as a conference member). Only the 2018-19 squad with 13 regular-season non-conference wins has more.
In its most recent action, #3/3 Houston took a 72-37 win over Texas State inside Fertitta Center on Dec. 21. It was the sixth time this season that the Cougars held an opponent under 50 points.
Against the Bobcats, sophomore guard Emanuel Sharp posted 17 points, thanks to a Fertitta Center-record 11-of-11 performance from the free throw line. The Tampa, Fla., native also grabbed three rebounds with a game-high four steals.
Sophomore forward Ja'Vier Francis totaled 13 points with five rebounds and two blocked shots while senior point guard Jamal Shead added 11 points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Senior guard LJ Cryer finished with nine points and three assists against Texas State and needs only eight points against Penn to reach 1,000 points in his collegiate career. This season, Cryer leads the Cougars and ranks fifth in the Big 12 with 17.0 points per game.
Saturday's game will be part of a doubleheader with Houston Women's Basketball, which faces Texas Tech at 1 p.m., inside Fertitta Center in its inaugural Big 12 Conference game.
