Houston has posted straight-set wins in last three and have only lost one set in last eight matches
HOUSTON – The #21 University of Houston Volleyball team picked up its eighth straight win and 11th sweep of the season with a win against rv TCU behind 22 digs from senior Kate Georgiades on Wednesday night at Fertitta Center.
Houston (17-7, 10-5 Big 12) has now earned nine straight-set wins in conference play, dropping only one set for a 30-1 set record in its 10 conference wins. The Cougars limited the Horned Frogs (15-13, 8-9 Big 12) to a .128 hitting percentage, TCU's third lowest mark of the year and lowest in conference play.Â
Multiple Cougars made moves on Houston's career records lists in the match. With six block assists against TCU, graduate Rachel Tullos tied the program's block assist record, matching Michelle Fraizer's 488 (1997-00). Senior Annie Cooke moved into sole possession of sixth with 110 career aces with two in the match to pass Amanda Carson's 109 aces (2007-10). Graduate Abbie Jackson also claimed #10 on Houston's career digs list as she brought her total to 1,154, surpassing Janelle Harmonson's 1,151 digs (1988-92).
Jackson used a match-best 17 kills to tally her 100th career match with double-digit kills. She's tallied 10-or-more kills in 100 of 136 matches in her career. Georgiades' 22 digs marked her 44th career match (seventh of the season) with 20-or-more digs and 96th career match with 10-or-more.
Tullos led Houston's blocking effort, participating in seven of the Cougars' 10 blocks against the Horned Frogs. Jackson used four blocks for a new season-high while junior Kellen Morin and graduate Kenna Sauer both tallied two.Â
SET ONE
Houston quickly took a 4-1 lead to open the match after Cooke earned the Cougars a 1-0 advantage with an ace on the first serve. Houston didn't let up from there, not allowing TCU to even the score at all in the set. The Cougars extended their lead to six at 12-6 and a 4-0 run later in the first furthered Houston's edge to 18-9. Houston kept the Horned Frogs from a comeback, clinching the set win 25-17.
Sauer, Jackson and graduate Nena Mbonu each posted four kills in the first set while Georgiades and graduate Morgan Janda both tallied five digs. Â
SET TWO
Neither team found a consistent advantage in the second, with 13 tied scores and three lead changes. TCU won the first two points, but Houston evened the score at 2-2. The score would end up even again at 3-3 and 8-8 before the Cougars earned a three-point lead at 12-9. The Horned Frogs closed the gap at 13-13 and earned their second lead of the set at 16-15. Houston would reclaim the lead at 19-18, and while TCU tied the set at 19-19, 20-20 and 21-21, a 3-0 Cougar run gave Houston the separation it needed to win the set, 25-22.Â
Jackson earned seven kills with a .353 hitting percentage in the second while Sauer recorded five kills of her own.Â
SET THREE
Similar to the second, the third set featured nine tied scores, but only one lead change. TCU earned the early edge, taking a two-point lead at 8-6. The Cougars tied the score at 10-10 and took the lead at 11-10. While the Horned Frogs would tie the match three more times, including as late as 20-20, they would never retake the lead with Houston taking the match with a 25-21 set win.Â
Georgiades soared to 13 digs in the third, helping the Cougars post 23 in the set. Tullos tallied four blocks while Cooke recorded eight assists and Jackson posted another six kills.  Â
