Meyer Paces Cougars at Chile Pepper Festival

Claire Meyer, Brandon Seagreaves lead Houston for third-straight meet
FAYTETTEVILLE, Ark. – In a 30-plus team field with over 275 competitors in both the men's and women's races, the University of Houston women's cross country team finished 16th overall at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday. The men's team finished 23rd overall.
For the third consecutive meet, senior Claire Meyer crossed the finish line first for the Cougars, clocking a 17-minutes, 12.5 seconds time over the 5k course in Fayetteville. At the 3.5k mark, the senior moved up five places from her 22nd place at the one-mile point and finished 17th overall (14th among attached runners).
Meyer helped lead the women to a 16th place finish in the largest field of the season Houston has raced in this year with 31 total teams racing.
Junior Macie Ellis moved up 10 spots over the final 1.5k, crossing in 18:20.0 as the Cougars' second finisher.
Senior Sondos Moursy finished third for Houston (18:27.4), followed closely behind by junior Zosia Bulhak (18:29.1), with sophomore Daniella Castillo (18:55.5) rounding out the scoring five for Houston.
Senior Brandon Seagreaves led the men for the third-straight meet, finishing 59th overall with a 25:00.3 time over the 8k course. Sophomore Branch Cox finished second for the Cougars, less than four seconds behind Seagreaves with a time of 25:04.1
Graduate Devin Vallejo-Bannister (25:28.6), freshman Miles Cox (25:30.4) and graduate Brycen Pitre (26:45.5) rounded out the scoring five racers for Houston that finished 23rd as a team.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will head to Texas A&M's Arturo Barrios Invitational Oct. 15 as its last tune up before the programs final trip to the American Athletic Conference Championships in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 29.
