PINEHURST, N.C. – University of Houston freshman Anne Normann fired an even-par 72 to lead the Cougars and tie for fourth following the First Round of the American Athletic Conference Championships on Sunday afternoon.
Competing on Pinehurst No. 6 at Pinehurst Resort, Normann drained four birdies in the opening round of the league's annual postseason event on the 6,290-yard, par-72 layout. The Rungsted, Denmark, native made birdie on the par-5 second hole and overcame consecutive bogeys on Nos. 5-6 with a birdie on No. 7 to return to even par.
Making her first appearance in The American Championships, Norman returned to red numbers with a birdie on the par-5 10th hole to open her back nine and rallied from a double-bogey 6 on No. 12 to make birdie on No. 15. She closed the day with three straight pars to join Lorena Tseng (Tulsa) Ana Laura Collado (UCF) and Taylor Dobson (Tulsa) in a tie for third.
As a team, the Cougars finished with a score of 296 to stand in third. #36 UCF and Tulsa were tied for the first-day lead at 293. Following the Cougars, East Carolina (298) and USF (301) rounded out the Top Five.
Like Normann, freshman Zoe Slaughter made her inaugural appearance at The American Championships on Sunday and was tied for 11th at 72.
Sophomore Karen Fredgaard and junior Maria Jose Martinez were tied for 17th at 75, while senior Ariana Saenz was tied for 41st at 81.
The tournament continues with the Second Round beginning at 7 a.m. (CDT) Monday and the Final Round on Tuesday morning.

PAIRINGS
For Monday's Second Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from East Carolina.
Saenz will start the day for the Cougars at 9 a.m. (CDT) Monday with Martinez (9:08 a.m. CDT), Fredgaard (9:16 a.m. CDT), Slaughter (9:24 a.m. CDT) and Normann (9:32 a.m. CDT) following.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
This marks the seventh straight season in which the Cougars will compete at the American Athletic Conference Championships and the sixth consecutive year as a team.
The Cougars have won three of the last four American Championships team titles and never finished below third. In 2019, Houston successfully defended its title and set tournament records with 54-hole team score of 13-under 851, while Leonie Harm captured the individual crown at 8-under 208.
Martinez is the lone Cougar in the lineup to have competed in The American Championships in previous years. The 2020 Championships was canceled due to the COVID-10 pandemic.
This marks the first time the Cougars will compete at Pinehurst #6 or in North Carolina during The American Championships. The previous six tournaments were held at Hammock Beach Resort & Golf Club in Palm Coast, Fla.

Following the American Athletic Conference Championships, the Cougars will wait to learn their NCAA postseason fate.

The 2021 NCAA Regionals will be held at University Club (Baton Rouge, La., LSU) Scarlet Course – OSU Golf Club (Columbus, Ohio, Ohio State); University of Louisville Golf Club (Louisville, Ky., Louisville) and Stanford Golf Course (Stanford, Calif., Stanford).
Top teams from each NCAA Regional will compete at the NCAA Championships, set for May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Houston is looking to compete in its sixth straight NCAA Regional. The Cougars have competed in NCAA Regionals every year in which it was eligible to compete as a team, starting with the 2014-15 season.
The 2020 NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
